Our
Story
Purity & Conviction
The heart of our conviction is simple yet deliberate. Trust the Site. 20 years ago, Peter Clarke founded the farm up in the cool heights of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Here, in a natural and beautiful ampitheatre, he chose the purity of planting dryland vineyards on virgin soils. Each block is exposed to unique aspects of soil and climate, rewarding us with layered and complex fruit that provides the foundation for our wines that are unveiled in our cellar to reveal their full expression of terroir and vintage.

When Peter Clarke discovered the perfect location for his vision, he saw a possibility that others might have missed —an amphitheater of virgin soils, ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This image shows the initial clearing process. The balance of the image shows the farm comprising alien trees, such as Wattle and Gum, having been made worse by a recent fire.

Peter walking the land one year after two D10 Catepillars towing between them a chain and massive wrecking ball, uprooted and removed all the alien vegetation. Preparation for planting vines was possible at this point. Meaning detailed satellite studies, soil testing, water lines, aspect and the like were actioned.

Strategically established on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, the farm was shaped by Peter’s vision – The Winery with a complementary restaurant and tasting room, is perfectly positioned in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation. The site able to show off the region’s most breathtaking views.

The finished Winery, Tasting room and Restaurant

The towering Babilonstoring mountain range, higher than Table Mountain, watches over La Vierge Farm, shaping its dynamic weather—ideal for our dryland farming—while offering a breathtaking vista.

The latest view of the farm reveals meticulously maintained vineyard blocks, predominantly planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
